1981 – The 1st Winter Flight

In 1981, the club directed a race called the Miller Lite Winter Flight which included a 5K, 10K, and 1-mile fun run. Over 320 runners participated. Chuck Cooper was race director.
Other races on the club’s agenda for 1981 were the Mayfest Run (10K, 5K & 1-mile), the Hunger Run (10K & 1-mile), and the Carolina Ten Miler (10 mile & 1-mile).
Bob Baugh – Rowan County’s marathon record-holder was race director for the Hunger Run. He ran the Bethal Marathon in eastern North Carolina in 2:47:11.
GST Club history doesn’t indicate why Winter Flight did not take place in ‘82 or ‘83.
