President’s Message

The cooler mornings feel great! I have heard it said that we should just train to maintain our fitness during summer’s hot and humid months. Those few cool mornings and low humidity are much appreciated, September begins to offer them, while daytime weather is usually great for just about any outdoor activity. On the farm, work projects seem easier to do. And with that comes better running when many of us have goals of a faster 5K, a fall marathon, or just adding some miles.

SRR’s wildly popular world-class columnist got me thinking when I was able to preview his topic for the month of September. I won’t go far into his subject, but Wayne as usual has his thinking cap on straight. One of the best things that we can do is to encourage non-runners or those not doing enough of it to make a positive habit. Read Wayne’s column later in the newsletter about how we just may be the person or group who gets someone else running. SRR’s Beginning Runners Class is back, starting on September 8th at 6pm at the Salisbury Police Department on Liberty Street. The class is open to true beginners and those wanting to restart after some sort of layoff. Best of all, there is no cost for current SRR members in good standing. Eight weeks to a 5K, and plenty of fun along the way.

Races this month include two brand new ones. The South Rowan Bible Teachers Association brings the Run for the Word 5K and Fun Run at Trinity Lutheran Church in Landis on Saturday, September 10th. Proceeds help fund the Bible teachers at South Rowan and Carson High Schools and China Grove and Corriher-Lipe Middle Schools. Organizers have put together a flat course and runners and walkers of all abilities are welcome.

The other new race is also a completely new concept for Rowan County participants. A 5pm Run to the River 5K will actually start in Spencer and finish at the Yadkin River, with the fastest two mile downhill finish ever used locally. Downhill is the key word, but participants have to work some in the first mile. The Town of Spencer and Rowan Moves are presenting this event. There is a bike ride out and back on the 5K course sponsored by the Pedal Factory and also a sunset kayak event to follow the 5K. The bike ride goes off just ahead of the 5K. All awards and refreshments will be done on the Wilcox Bridge over the river.

Looking ahead to October, three veteran events return. On October 8th, we’ll go to Mooresville for another flat and fast 5K at Mooresville High School for the T-Man’s 5K. The popular Halloween double returns with the St. Matthews 5K at St. Matthews Church on Saturday, October 29th and the Spooky Sprint 5K at Catawba College on Sunday, October 30th. Both have costume contests and also quick courses, a fun run and quality long sleeve shirts.

So, with a beginning runners class and five races in the next two months, there is plenty of fun ahead. The 40th Annual Winter Flight 8K, 5K and fun run are getting some early attention with the retro shirt contest. Lots of old shirts have been claimed, but there is room for plenty more. Search your closets and if you’ve got a shirt not already claimed, send the photo of you wearing the shirt to either david.freeze@ctc.net or amandamlewis1996@gmail.com and we will get you entered in the race day cash raffle.

I’m just back from another bike ride, this time along the Mississippi River, and amaready for a fun fall of activities and excited about the list above. Hope you are noticing that SRR membership is growing. Join us and be an active part of SRR!
